iSuppli: Research Firm Says Olympics Will Boost LCD Panel Demand

Shipments of liquid-crystal-display television panels will rise to a record 100 million units in 2008 from 80 million last year, as demand driven by the Beijing Olympics will offset the effects of a weak U.S. economy, research firm iSuppli said. But Sweta Dash, a director at California-based iSuppli, also said that the panel makers' preparations for the Olympics will likely lead to an oversupply at the end of this year and hurt prices in 2009. Flat-panel demand has been weak in the first quarter, she said.
