Dunkin' Donuts Targets Shanghai
Dunkin' Donuts plans to open in Shanghai this spring as part of a push into China.
The coffee and bakery chain, a unit of Dunkin' Brands Inc., says it plans to open fewer than 10 locations in the Shanghai area this year, with an additional 10 outlets in the area, and possibly other Chinese cities, in 2009. Dunkin' Donuts first opened a handful of stores in China during the 1990s, but closed them.
In the U.S., Dunkin' has expanded in recent years on the success of its coffee drinks while emphasizing its convenience as a no-frills coffee destination. In China, its locations will have more seating, and they are expected to sell more food than beverages, said Will Kussell, president and chief brand officer for Dunkin' Donuts Worldwide.
In Shanghai, Dunkin' plans to build its drinks around coffee while offering a variety of teas.
