Jury Verdict in Murder Is Overturned
Full Text (109 words)The New Jersey Supreme Court on Monday overturned the murder conviction of a man who admitted killing and dismembering his companion in 1998.
In a 5-2 decision, the court ruled that trial errors cast doubt on the fairness of the jury's verdict against the man, George Jenewicz, for the murder of his companion, Eunice Gillens.
Mr. Jenewicz, now 54, asserted in his appeal that the trial judge had improperly barred testimony from two of his proposed witnesses, including Ms. Gillens's mother, and that the prosecution had disparaged and improperly cross-examined a defense expert. The Middlesex County prosecutor's office, which handled the case, said it was prepared to retry Mr. Jenewicz.
