Giants Have Fan in Cashman

Full Text (179  words)

When Brian Cashman was an assistant general manager for the Yankees, one of his roommates was Timmy Coughlin, son of Tom Coughlin, the Giants' coach.

He took a few calls from the Boss, said Cashman, referring to George Steinbrenner, the Yankees' principal owner.

Cashman, who attended a lecture Friday with Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein at William Paterson University, said he has remained a Giants fan and plans to attend the Super Bowl on Feb. 3 in Glendale, Ariz. Epstein, the Red Sox general manager, is a Patriots fan, but he said he would not attend.

After the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series, Epstein said some team officials met with Patriots Coach Bill Belichick to ask him how the Patriots had handled being defending champions. Epstein would not divulge details of the conversation, but said it was nothing earth-shattering.

Cashman said he hoped the Giants could end New England's perfect season and win a title for Coughlin. I'm going to have the opportunity to see a tremendous upset or see a team make history, he said.
