Sun Microsystems Reports Doubling of Profit

The computer maker Sun Microsystems said on Thursday that its quarterly profit doubled.

Net income for Sun's fiscal 2008 second quarter, which ended Dec. 30, rose to $260 million, or 31 cents a share, from $133 million, or 15 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue increased 1.4 percent, to $3.62 billion.

The company's gross profit margin increased 3.5 percentage points, to 48.5 percent. Sun recorded $32 million of reorganization charges in the period.

The company had strong growth in emerging markets, including India, China, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
