Japan: Wii Bolsters Nintendo's Profit; [Brief]

Nintendo's profit for the first nine months of the fiscal year nearly doubled from the year-earlier period, propelled by its hit Wii game machine, the company said. Group net profit at Nintendo, which also makes Super Mario, left, and Pokemon games, was 258.93 billion yen ($2.43 billion) for the nine months that ended Dec. 31, up 96.3 percent from 131.92 billion yen for the same period in fiscal 2006. Nintendo did not give a quarterly breakdown. The company said it had sold more than 20 million Wii machines worldwide, 14.29 million of them in the latest three quarters. Sales in the nine months were 1.32 trillion yen ($12.4 billion), up from 712.6 billion a year earlier.
