PetroChina Co.: Company Said to Have Pact On LNG With Qatar Concern

PetroChina Co. has agreed to a major liquefied-natural-gas deal with Qatar, two people familiar with the situation said. PetroChina has signed a heads of agreement with Qatargas Operating Co. for long-term supplies to its Dalian receiving terminal, which has a planned capacity of three million metric tons a year and is due to start operations in 2012, the people said. A Dalian government official confirmed the terminal was recently approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, and that it needed to have guaranteed supply to proceed to the construction phase. Qatar is the world's largest producer of liquefied natural gas and has been courted by major energy consumers in Asia for supplies. PetroChina spokesman Mao Zefeng declined to comment. Qatargas officials weren't available.
