Bioniche Life Sciences Inc.: Vaccine to Fight E. Coli Moves Toward Approval

Bioniche Life Sciences Inc. said its vaccine for reducing E. coli bacteria in cattle cleared a hurdle toward approval. The Agriculture Department said the vaccine "meets the 'expectation of efficacy' standard" and is eligible for a conditional license, provided Bioniche develops a plan that would collect sufficient data to move the product to full license. The Belleville, Ontario, company said its vaccine is designed as an onfarm intervention to reduce the amount of E. coli O157:H7 shed by cattle. The bacteria live in the animals' intestines and can sicken people if meat becomes contaminated.
