Volvo Workers on Strike at U.S. Plant
Full Text (125 words)Swedish truck maker AB Volvo said production at a U.S. factory was halted after 2,600 workers went on strike. Volvo, the world's second- biggest truck maker by sales after Daimler AG, said the walkout will stop practically all production at its New River Valley plant in Virginia until further notice. It said the United Auto Workers union had called a strike early Friday morning. The plant turns out about 100 Volvo and Mack trucks a day. "We continue negotiations but it's difficult to have a view yet on how much this will cost," spokesman Marten Wikforss said. While Volvo's demand is strong in Europe and Asia, sales in the U.S. plunged last year after a surge in 2006 ahead of last year's tougher emission rules.
