Stora Enso: Firm to Close 2 Paper Mills, Cut 985 Jobs Despite Protests

Paper maker Stora Enso said it will close two of its Finnish mills, cutting 985 jobs despite resistance from politicians and workers, and prompting more than 1,000 staff to walk out. Stora said it had to close the mills to cut excess capacity in the industry, refusing to sell them to rivals, as it struggles with rising costs, especially for raw timber. Stora employs a total of 12,900 staff in Finland.
