Selig Gets Three-Year Extension as MLB Commissioner

Full Text (135  words)

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Bud Selig has been given a three-year extension as Major League Baseball commissioner, which will keep him in the job through the 2012 season.

The unanimous decision made at yesterday's owners' meeting came two days after Mr. Selig and union head Donald Fehr testified before a congressional committee that both criticized MLB for its steroids problem and praised the league for strides made over the past three years.

Mr. Selig will become MLB's second-longest-serving leader behind Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who was the first commissioner from 1920-44.

Mr. Selig received $14.5 million in the 12-month period ending Oct. 31, 2005, according to MLB's last available tax return.

He became acting commissioner in 1992. After saying he wouldn't take the job, Mr. Selig was elected to a five-year term as commissioner in 1998.
