Surrogates Fan Tension on Race

Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama sought to lower the heat over racial matters injected into the presidential race in recent days, yet campaign surrogates still fanned the flames.

Rep. Charles Rangel (D., N.Y.), a Clinton supporter, blamed Mr. Obama Monday for putting race into the dialogue. "How race got into this thing is because Obama said 'race,'" Mr. Rangel said in an interview with NY1 news channel. "But there is nothing that Hillary Clinton has said that baffles me."

Mrs. Clinton caught flak after saying it "took a president" to pass civil rights legislation, a remark some viewed as detracting from the work of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
