In his discussion of the future of the Metropolitan Museum after the departure of Philippe de Montebello, ("The Conservative as Radical," Leisure & Arts, Jan. 10), Eric Gibson lists four ways a new director can put his or her stamp on a museum. However, there is a fifth -- one that Peter Gelb has pursued so successfully at the Metropolitan Opera. Find ways to bring the institution's magnificent collections to a wider audience. Not everyone can visit the galleries in person, but I suspect there are many ways technology can expand the museum's reach outside the New York area if a new director would take on this challenge.
