WEEKEND JOURNAL; Picks -- Brian K. Vaughn: Comics; An award-winning writer brings his series 'Y: The Last Man' to a close
A world without men is finally coming to close.
On Jan. 30, Brian K. Vaughn will finish his most acclaimed comic series, "Y: The Last Man." After a mysterious plague kills every man in the world instantly, a young escape artist named Yorick Brown and his monkey Ampersand are strangely spared. Evading female soldiers and gangs of angry, antimale freedom fighters, Brown and his guardian angel, a dreadlocked government agent named 355, search the globe for Brown's girlfriend and an answer to the male holocaust. Now, fans are holding their breath for the 60th and final issue, which will bring the journey to a close.
Since its launch in 2002, the series has attracted a wide audience. Mr. Vaughn, who wrote the award-winning graphic novel "Pride of Baghdad" and also writes for the hit ABC television series "Lost," says part of the inspiration for "Y: The Last Man" came from attending an all-boys high school in Cleveland. "I've always been fascinated with gender," he says. "When you're separated from the other sex, you can't help but think about it."
