Tuna Sales Halt Urged

Full Text (91  words)

A global conservation group urged retailers on Monday to stop selling Mediterranean bluefin tuna as part of a move by several European supermarket chains meant to help the fish's stocks recover.

Sergi Tudela, head of fisheries at WWF Mediterranean, called the chains' decisions courageous and said, We urge other retailers to follow suit.

In November, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, which oversees stocks, rejected calls by the WWF, formerly the World Wildlife Fund, for a three-year ban on bluefin tuna fishing, saying that stocks were robust enough.
