BARR--Thomas D. The lawyers and staff of Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP mourn the loss of their former partner Tom Barr, a friend, mentor and pioneer in the area of litigation. Mr. Barr, a well known trial lawyer, died in Santa Barbara, California on January 24th. His 77th birthday was on January 23. Over the course of his career, Mr. Barr was recognized as one of the country's most skilled courtroom advocates. He is well known for leading IBM's defense in its 13 year legal battle with the Justice Department which alleged that IBM has monopolized the market for commercial computers. In 1982, the government finally dismissed its case as being without merit. Mr. Barr was the Co-Chair of Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law from 1977 to 1979. In his name the Lawyers Committee established the Thomas D. Barr Mississippi Freedom Fund. Mr. Barr was a graduate of the University of Missouri at Kansas City and Yale Law School, which he attended after serving as an officer in the Marine Corps. He joined the Cravath firm in 1958, became a partner in 1965 and later served for many years as head of the firm's litigation department. In later years, Mr. Barr went on to successfully defend the Time magazine in a high profile libel case brought by Ariel Sharon, and to represent the trustees for bond holders in connection with the massive default of the Washington Public Power Supply System. Mr. Barr is survived by his wife of 54 years, Cornelia, four children, Daniel of Paradise Valley, Arizona, Anne of West Bloomfield, Michigan, Robert of Starksboro, Vermont, and Sally of Santa Barbara, California. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Andrew, David, Christopher and Michael.
