Full Text (92  words)

Consumer prices rose 6.5 percent in December compared with the period a year ago, despite efforts to curb a surge in food costs, the National Bureau of Statistics reported Thursday. The December rise brought inflation for 2007 to 4.8 percent, well above the government's goal of 3 percent, the agency said. The monthly inflation rate was slightly below the 6.9 percent rate reported in November, which was the fastest growth rate in 11 years. The government also reported that China's economy grew 11.4 percent in 2007, its fastest expansion in 14 years.
