[编辑] What Is the TOEFL Test?

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written, and heard in college and university settings.

The TOEFL test is offered in different formats depending on a test taker's location.

The Internet-based TOEFL Test The TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The test helps students demonstrate that they have the English skills needed for success.

[编辑] What Is the Benefit of An Internet-based Test?

TOEFL iBT emphasizes integrated skills and provides better information to institutions about students' ability to communicate in an academic setting and their readiness for academic coursework. With Internet-based testing, ETS can capture speech and score responses in a standardized manner.

Online registration and online score reporting make it easier for students to register for TOEFL iBT and receive their test scores.

[编辑] When Will TOEFL iBT Be Available?

ETS is introducing the new test in phases.

[编辑] What Is Happening To The Current TOEFL Tests?

The computer- and paper-based (CBT, PBT) versions of the TOEFL test will be given at a particular location until the Internet-based version is implemented.

[编辑] Why Take the TOEFL Test?

Most people take the TOEFL test as a prerequisite for admission into colleges and universities where English is used or required. In addition, many government, licensing, and certification agencies and exchange and scholarship programs use TOEFL scores to evaluate the English proficiency of people for whom English is not their native language.

[编辑] Who Should Take the TOEFL Test?

Nonnative English speakers at the 11th-grade level or above should take the TOEFL test to provide evidence of their English proficiency before beginning academic work. The test content is considered too difficult for students below 11th grade.

Many institutions report that they frequently do not require TOEFL test scores of certain kinds of international applicants. These include

Nonnative speakers who hold degrees or diplomas from postsecondary institutions in English-speaking countries (e.g., the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand) Nonnative speakers who have successfully completed at least a two-year course of study in which English was the language of instruction Transfer students from institutions in the United States or Canada whose academic course work was favorably evaluated in relation to its demands and duration. Nonnative speakers who have taken the TOEFL test within the past two years Nonnative speakers who have successfully pursued academic work at schools where English was the language of instruction in an English-speaking country for a specified period, generally two years. Students should contact their prospective institutions directly concerning their specific admission requirements.

[编辑] Where Can People Take the Test?

TOEFL iBT is taken via the Internet at ETS-certified test centers. This makes it possible to greatly expand the number of locations where the test can be taken.

[编辑] Who Accepts TOEFL Scores?

More than 5,000 colleges, universities, and licensing agencies in 90 countries accept TOEFL scores. See a list of these institutions (PDF). See Also: TOEFL Computer-based and Paper-based Testing Overview

[编辑] Test Content

The TOEFL Internet-based test emphasizes integrated skills and measures all four language skills, including speaking. The content on the test is authentic, and the language is consistent with that used in everyday, real academic settings.

[编辑] The test has four sections

Reading measures the ability to understand academic reading matter. Listening measures the ability to understand English as it is used in colleges and universities. Speaking measures the ability to speak English. Writing measures the ability to write in a way that is appropriate for college and university course work. Test content is based on a “corpus,” or database, of spoken and written language that currently contains more than 2.7 million words, collected from educational institutions throughout the United States.

The spoken language in the database was collected from

lectures and interactive classes labs office hours study groups everyday service interactions (for example, at the bookstore or registrar's office).

The written language was collected from sources, such as textbooks and course materials.

Listening and reading texts in the test conform to the characteristics of the language in the database.

The TOEFL Internet-based test is unique because it is the only large-scale, standardized test that integrates, or combines, four basic communication skills.

For example, you might read a passage of text and listen to a lecture, and then write or speak about it in response.

These integrated tasks are excellent measures of your ability to communicate in English because they more closely reflect how we use real language. These practical, everyday tasks allow ETS to obtain a more realistic measure of how well you will be able to communicate in an academic setting.

This approach also helps you prepare for success in the real academic environments you will face once you begin coursework.

The new test consists of four sections. It is approximately four hours long. Information about each section is provided below.

All four sections can be taken on one day. Note-taking is allowed throughout the test to help test takers answer the questions.

[编辑] Reading

Three to five academic reading passages followed by comprehension questions that measure the ability to understand and analyze the meaning of the passages Familiar question types from the computer-based TOEFL test New question types in which test takers demonstrate they have learned what they have read, either by filling out a table or completing a narrative summary choose a correct paraphrase of a reading New features that make the testing experience easier for test takers, including a glossary and review feature.

[编辑] Listening

Two to three conversations that include two or more speakers in each Four to six lectures, which include classroom dialogue Opportunity to take notes while listening Familiar question types from the computer-based TOEFL test New question types that measure test takers' ability to understand a speaker's attitude or meaning.

[编辑] Speaking

Two independent tasks about familiar topics. View a sample task. Test takers state, explain, and support their response using personal knowledge and experience. Two tasks based on Reading and Listening material. View a sample task. Tasks include a short reading passage and a short talk (These are shorter than those in the Reading and Listening sections.) Questions require test takers to combine information from both the reading and the listening material in the responses One task is based on a campus-related situation, and the other is based on academic classroom material. Test takers can take notes and use them to respond. Two tasks based on Listening material, including a short lecture or conversation. View a sample task. Questions require test takers to summarize key ideas from the talks in the responses One task is based on a campus-related situation, and the other is based on academic classroom material. Test takers can take notes and use them to respond. Trained raters evaluate test takers' ability in: Topic development - show they understand and can make connections, and convey relevant information Delivery - use clear, smooth, sustained speech for overall intelligibility Language use - demonstrate control of grammar and word choice, and respond coherently

[编辑] Writing

One Reading/Listening/Writing task Academic reading and lecture Test takers must answer a question discussing the key points in the lecture and explaining how they relate to those in the reading passage. Reading passage appears first, then is removed from the screen during the lecture. Test takers can view the passage again while responding the question. Test takers can take notes and use them to respond One independent task about a familiar topic Test takers state, explain and support their response using personal knowledge and experience. This task is similar to the writing task on the computer-based TOEFL test and the Test of Written English (TWE). Trained raters evaluate test takers' ability to demonstrate an understanding of the material, as well as write clearly, accurately, and in a well-organized manner. The integrated skills approach to assessment reflects real English use in everyday university situations--both in and out of the classroom.
